What it treats

Lowers the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular events in people with high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, or known coronary artery disease.

Typical dosing

Typical adult dose: 10-80 mg once daily, taken at the same time each day. Can be taken with or without food.

Side effects

Common: muscle aches, mild stomach upset, joint pain. Serious (rare): unexplained muscle pain or weakness with dark urine (rhabdomyolysis), liver enzyme elevation.

Interactions to know

Avoid large amounts of grapefruit juice. Tell your prescriber about other cholesterol meds, certain antibiotics (clarithromycin), antifungals, and HIV protease inhibitors.
